Why Catholics Use Holy Water, Medals, and Scapulars

August 31, 20252 min read

Catholics often use items such as holy water, medals, and scapulars in daily life. These are not superstitions or magical charms. They are called sacramentals, which are sacred signs that help us grow in faith and remind us of God’s presence.

What Are Sacramentals?

Sacramentals are different from the Sacraments. The Sacraments give us God’s grace directly. Sacramentals, such as holy water, medals, and scapulars, prepare our hearts to receive grace and inspire us to live with faith.

1. Holy Water

Holy water is ordinary water that has been blessed by a priest. Catholics use it to bless themselves when entering a church, in their homes, and even during prayer. It reminds us of baptism, washes away venial sins, and protects us from evil.

When Catholics make the Sign of the Cross with holy water, it is a simple but powerful prayer:
“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

2. Medals

Catholic medals often feature saints, especially the Miraculous Medal of the Blessed Virgin Mary or a medal of St. Benedict. Wearing or carrying a medal is a way to remember the example of a saint and to ask for their prayers.

The medal itself does not have power. The true power comes from God, who blesses us through faith and devotion.

3. Scapulars

A scapular is a piece of cloth, usually brown, worn around the neck. The most common is the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It is a sign of devotion to Mary and a reminder to live faithfully in Christ.

Wearing the scapular shows a commitment to follow Jesus, pray daily, and trust in Mary’s protection.

Why Catholics Use Them

Holy water, medals, and scapulars are outward reminders of an inward faith. They help Catholics stay connected to God throughout the day, recall their baptism, seek the prayers of the saints, and remain close to Mary.

They are not magic. They are signs of God’s love and tools that strengthen prayer and devotion.

Final Thoughts

So, why do Catholics use holy water, medals, and scapulars? Because these sacramentals remind us of God’s grace, protect us from spiritual harm, and encourage us to live a life of faith.

They are small but powerful signs that bring Christ into daily life and guide Catholics to holiness.

For some, being Catholic is about Sunday Mass, receiving the Sacraments, or praying the Rosary. At its heart, the Catholic faith is much deeper. It is a way of life that shapes how we think, act, and love every day.
