How to Choose a Patron Saint

September 21, 20252 min read

Catholics believe that the saints are our heavenly companions, cheering us on and interceding for us in prayer. Choosing a patron saint means inviting one of these holy men or women to walk closely with us on our spiritual journey. A patron saint is not just a figure from history but a friend who understands our struggles and brings our intentions before God.

But how do you know which saint to choose? Here are some simple steps to help guide you.

1. Look at Your Name

Many Catholics take as patrons the saints they were named after. If you share a name with a saint, that saint is already a natural companion in your faith journey. Even if you were not named after a saint, you can look up saints with names similar to yours.

2. Reflect on Your Life Circumstances

Think about your state in life, your work, or your challenges. For example:

  • Students often turn to St. Thomas Aquinas or St. Joseph of Cupertino.

  • Mothers may look to St. Monica or St. Gianna Beretta Molla.

  • Workers and providers might be drawn to St. Joseph the Worker.

The saints faced real struggles, and many of them can connect deeply with your experiences.

3. Follow Your Devotions and Interests

Sometimes a particular saint’s story will stir your heart. Perhaps you admire St. Thérèse’s “Little Way,” or you feel drawn to the courage of St. Joan of Arc. God often speaks to us through these attractions.

4. Pray for Guidance

Choosing a patron saint is ultimately a matter of prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to the saint who will be a strong intercessor for you. Trust that God will place the right saint in your path.

5. Start Building a Relationship

Once you choose a saint, get to know them better. Read their life story, pray through their writings, and ask for their intercession daily. Over time, your patron saint becomes a true companion in faith.

A Simple Prayer When Choosing a Patron Saint

“Lord, thank You for the gift of the saints who inspire us by their holy lives. Please guide me in choosing a patron saint who will walk with me and intercede for me. May this heavenly friend help me grow closer to You each day. Amen.”

Final Thoughts

Choosing a patron saint is about more than just picking a name. It’s about forming a relationship with a heavenly companion who helps you grow in holiness. Whether it’s a saint connected to your name, your life circumstances, or one who inspires your heart, trust that God will lead you to the right one.
